From automotive exhaust systems to furniture frames to air conditioning lines, tube end forming shows up in the manufacturing process of an enormous range of everyday products. What Is Tube End Forming?

Tube end forming (also called end finishing) refers to a family of processes that reshape the end of a tube after it's been cut and, often, bent. Rather than joining two tubes with an added fitting, end forming reshapes the tube itself to create the connection point, seal, or structural feature it needs — reducing part count, assembly time, and points of potential failure.

Common End Forming Processes

Flaring

Expands the very end of the tube outward at an angle, commonly used to create a sealing surface for compression fittings — frequently seen in refrigeration, HVAC, and fuel line applications.

Expanding

Increases the tube's diameter over a defined length, often to allow one tube to slip-fit inside another of the same nominal size, eliminating the need for a separate coupling.

Reducing

The opposite of expanding — necks the tube diameter down, either to fit into a smaller downstream component or to create a step transition within a single continuous tube.

Beading

Forms a raised ring or rib around the tube's circumference, typically used to lock a hose or fitting in place mechanically, preventing it from sliding off under pressure or vibration.

Ram Forming

Uses a shaped ram or punch to press a specific profile — closures, dimples, notches, or custom geometries — into the tube end, often for more complex or application-specific shapes than flaring, expanding, or beading alone can produce.

IO (Inside/Outside) Sizing

A precision sizing operation that brings a tube's inner and/or outer diameter to a tighter tolerance than the raw tube stock, often used as a preparatory step before a downstream forming or joining operation.

Choosing the Right End Former

With this many process types available, selecting the right machine typically comes down to balancing three factors:

●        Budget — entry-level and mid-range machines cover a large share of common flaring, expanding, and beading applications without the cost of a fully custom system

●        Flexibility — if your production mix includes multiple part geometries or tube sizes, a machine that supports quick tooling changeovers will save far more time over its life than a single-purpose unit

●        Capacity — both the maximum tube diameter and the wall thickness/material hardness the machine can reliably form need to match your actual product range, not just your most common part

The TF-80 Series
